How the grant process works

Closed: Canada Greener Homes Grant. December 31, 2025, was the last day to submit your documents. Requests submitted by the deadline will continue to be processed.

How the grant process works

Step 1. Closed to new applications in February 2024

While the Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to existing applicants on December 31, 2025, there are other programs available throughout Canada, which can help you make your home more energy efficient.

Residents of the following provinces, refer to your provincial program for further information:

Step 2A. Pre-retrofit EnerGuide home evaluation

This was a mandatory step before starting the retrofits.
An energy advisor performed the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, which measured the energy efficiency of homes. The energy advisor was registered with Natural Resources Canada and was a representative of the service organization selected when homeowners applied through the Canada Greener Homes portal.

Step 2B. (optional) Interest-free loan - Applications closed

You can no longer apply for a loan. October 1, 2025, was the last day to apply. For details, visit the Canada Greener Homes Loan page.

Step 3. Retrofit your home

After the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation was completed, you needed to review the recommendations and decide which retrofits worked best for your budget and renovation plans.

Step 4. Post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

You had to book a post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation, and submit the required documents online or by mail. Once the post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation was completed, you would have received a new EnerGuide label which shows how much more energy-efficient your home has become. This must have been completed before the program deadline of December 31, 2025.

Step 5. Request and receive your grant

You were required to upload the receipts of your evaluations and completed retrofits, marked paid in full, to the online Greener Homes portal. If all your documents meet the program requirements, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your total grant amount, which would help cover part of your retrofits costs. After you confirm, you will receive a cheque for the grant by mail within 30 business days.
