Step 2A. Pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

Closed: Canada Greener Homes Grant. December 31, 2025, was the last day to submit your documents. Requests submitted by the deadline will continue to be processed.

Canada Greener Homes Grant applicants had to complete the entire retrofit journey to be eligible for funding.

As part of the grant process, you were required to arrange two EnerGuide evaluations: a pre-retrofit evaluation and a post-retrofit evaluation. These evaluations were conducted by an energy advisor, registered with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

The pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation provides expert advice on what retrofits make the most sense for a home. It also shows how to improve the energy performance of a home. For example, if you were thinking of installing solar panels, the evaluation explains how to conserve more of the renewable energy you were producing at home.

Note: It was recommended that homeowners ensure their energy advisor evaluate the potential energy efficiency improvements listed on the eligible retrofits page.

1. Schedule your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

During the application process, homeowners selected a service organization registered with NRCan to conduct the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation. A representative from the selected service organization contacts the homeowner to schedule an evaluation.

Cost of your EnerGuide evaluation

Homeowners paid up front for their pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. The prices vary across Canada and are dependent on factors such as the location and size of a home.

Homeowners could get up to $600 as a maximum contribution toward the total cost of their pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. In some cases, the maximum grant amount for the two evaluations doesn’t cover the full cost of the evaluations.

Program participants are advised to keep their documents and receipts until March 31, 2028.

Reminder: Homeowners were required to complete at least one eligible retrofit and the full grant process to receive the contribution towards the evaluation fees.

What happens if I do not hear from my service organization?

The response times from NRCan and service organizations may vary, due to high demand. Homeowners may follow-up with their service organization about the status of their application if they have not been contacted.

During the grant process, homeowners had the option to call one or more of the service organizations in their area before choosing the ideal company for them, and to follow up if the evaluation wasn’t scheduled within a few weeks.

2. Review the results of the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

When the pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation is complete, the energy advisor provided:

  • an EnerGuide home rating and a label
  • Homeowner Information Sheet, which described the assessed building components and equipment and how the home’s energy was used
  • Renovation Upgrade Report with recommended retrofits for improving the home’s energy performance

This information helped homeowners decide which retrofits to undertake.

Your energy advisor was required to provide you with these reports (i.e. by mail or email). It could take a minimum of 14 days after your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation for the energy advisor to send them.

Your service organization was also required to submit your reports to the online Canada Greener Homes portal. You could access your reports by logging in to the portal.

It could take a minimum of 30 days after your pre-retrofit or post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation for the service organization to submit this information to the portal.
