Our areas of focus
CanmetENERGY-Ottawa’s research and development (R&D) program in this domain integrates our research on renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, marine and geothermal, with our research on electrification, storage and transportation, to maximize synergies, address systems-level issues, such as
- Wind energy systems: research to support onshore and offshore wind development and expansion and address environmental issues
- Solar energy systems: research to advance solar energy resource assessment (solar radiation and weather data through satellite and ground measurements), and innovative solar thermal and combined solar photovoltaic-thermal systems
- Marine Energy Systems: research to accelerate the development of river hydrokinetic, tidal and wave energy systems through marine energy resource assessment, mapping, and addressing environmental issues
- Geothermal energy systems: research to investigate advanced geothermal energy technologies and to help advance the deployment of conventional geothermal systems
- Electrification and Energy Storage: Investigates the implications of increased electrified loads and demand from buildings, transportation and industry, on electric grid expansion, reliability, resilience, and costs, in addition to researching the mitigation of these impacts in various ways, including energy storage
- Transportation: research on novel transportation concepts and strategies, using electricity or hydrogen as fuel, and assessment of their implementation for light, medium and heavy duty on-road and off-road applications
Our research on the above topics explores different aspects including:
- conducting technology R&D on, and supporting demonstrations of, novel technologies
- developing resource assessment datasets and maps to support investment decisions
- Investigating the integration of increased renewables into the grid, including the provision of grid services through renewables
- developing approaches to minimize environmental and end-of-life impacts

New Canadian solar resource database available on Federal Geospatial Platform
CanmetENERGY Ottawa and partners have initiated the Canadian Solar Resource and Engineering Climate Database with publication of Canadian Weather Energy and Engineering Datasets (CWEEDS) and Canadian Weather Year for Energy Calculation (CWEC). Users can search for and download weather design input files directly from an interactive map of 564 locations across Canada.
