Dynamic carbon capture for iron and steel production

Project location: CanmetENERGY Ottawa

Timeline: Ongoing

Program: Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS)

Project description

This project focuses on identifying and developing decarbonization solutions for hard-to-abate GHG emissions in the iron and steel industry, particularly for dynamic process emission streams such as the electric arc furnace (EAF).

Dynamic modelling and piloting activities will guide understanding of how carbon capture technologies can be better designed to handle process streams from batch-type iron and steelmaking operations while complimenting the usage of other decarbonisation strategies, such as fuels switching from fossil fuels to biocarbon.

Project updates

Modelling tools have been developed to probabilistically predict the EAF off-gas properties (composition, temperature, pressure) with time and apply those predictions to simulated carbon capture technologies.

Pilot-scale facility is under construction to support dynamic carbon capture testing using real (natural gas and/or biomass derived) and synthetic flue gases. The facility includes multiple test cells for parallel development of multiple decarbonization technologies at TRL 4-5.

Bench-scale testing under dynamic conditions have shown proof-of concept operations for use of fixed bed chemical looping for heat recovery and CO2 concentration of EAF off-gases.
