Bioenergy and biofuels

Our research and development (R&D) focuses on advancing technology development and innovative solutions to produce low-carbon transportation fuels. This work supports Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction commitments to net zero by 2050 and 40-45% below 2005 levels by 2030.

Our areas of focus

Our R&D seeks to advance biorefining and co-processing technologies for producing liquid biofuels with biocrudes derived from biomass sources and wastes like forest and agriculture residues and wastes, municipal solids and other recycled wastes, algae, and lipid feedstock sources such as waste cooking oil and animal fats. We work on:

  • biocrude upgrading
  • biorefining and co-processing technologies and piloting
  • biofuels (biogasoline, biodiesel/renewable diesel, biojet, etc.) production from biomass and various wastes
  • supporting industry in technology development, demonstration and scaling up
  • process modelling/simulation, techno-economic assessments (TEA) on emerging technologies, and life cycle assessments (LCA) on GHG emissions
  • input into Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations and other government policies and regulations
