Advanced chemistry for clean fuels

Our research and development (R&D) focuses on studying advanced hydrocarbon chemistry and developing analytical characterization techniques for supporting sustainable and clean fuel technology development, and production.

Our areas of focus

Most existing standard and advanced characterization methods are designed and developed for fossil fuels samples and are not fully applicable to biocrudes derived from biomass and wastes. Our work centres on developing advanced methodologies to specifically analyze biocrudes and biofuels. We also explore new and fundamental chemical/electrochemical approaches and concepts to produce clean fuels. Our focuses are:

  • advanced chemistry and characterization of hydrocarbons
  • deep understanding of oxygenate groups in biooils/biocrudes and biofuels
  • biogenic carbon tracking and quantification in blended fuels
  • electrification of hydrocarbon processing (an electrochemistry approach)
  • the identification of origins/sources of hydrogen (H2) produced from different sources
  • supporting clean fuel technology development
