Innovative geospatial solutions

Developing innovative geospatial solutions is a key focus at the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO). Our goal is to transform geospatial data into information you can use to support government priorities and national initiatives. Continuous development of innovative geospatial solutions allows CCMEO to deliver fast, reliable, and accurate national mapping products and technologies, helping Canadians work on projects related to the environment, land management, natural hazard risk preparedness and mitigation, and more.

We use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning technologies to analyze and process a wide variety of geospatial data, including satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and elevation models. Through innovative projects such as environmental change detection, data segmentation, and enhanced digital elevation model creation, we assist governments, communities, and researchers in addressing environmental and economic challenges.

What we do

Geospatial AI feature extraction and segmentation: extracting meaningful information (objects, land cover types, structures) from diverse sources such as satellite imagery, aerial photos, and lidar.

Change detection, hydrology, and flood risk assessment: analyzing how landscapes evolve over time and how these changes affect watersheds and flood vulnerability.

Enhancement and modernization of geospatial datasets: increasing the resolution, quality, or usability of large geospatial archives.

Advanced machine learning and foundation model research: exploring cutting‑edge AI methods to reduce data requirements and generalize across multiple data sources.

Emerging technologies, digital twins, and global partnerships: exploring new tech and international deployments for future‑oriented research.
