Green Freight Program drives change to more efficient fleets

Truck on road

Trailer fairings and side skirts can reduce drag by limiting airflow beneath the trailer. Aerodynamic upgrades like this are eligible for funding under the Green Freight Program’s stream 1.

Since launching in December 2022, stream 1 of the Green Freight Program (GFP) has driven big results through energy assessments and truck and trailer equipment retrofits. As of December 2025, the GFP received more than 1,000 applications and provided more than 785 grants for third-party fleet energy assessments and truck and trailer equipment retrofits.

From refrigerated trailers to flatbeds and dry vans, Canadian freight companies have completed more than 50,000 retrofits with GFP stream 1 funding to transform their fleets and get ready for a cleaner, greener future.

Funding supported a range of smart retrofits designed to cut fuel use and emissions, including:

  • Aerodynamic upgrades like trailer fairings and side skirts that are mounted on the underside of a trailer to reduce drag by limiting airflow beneath the trailer.
  • Automatic tire pressure monitoring systems that boost safety by preventing accidents from underinflated tires, improve fuel efficiency by minimizing rolling resistance, lower maintenance costs and extend tire life.
  • Auxiliary power units that keep cab systems running — heat, air conditioning and electronics — without idling the main engine, saving fuel, reducing wear and improving driver comfort.
  • Telematics devices that deliver real-time vehicle data to optimize fleet performance including GPS tracking, performance monitoring and driver behaviour analysis.

With more than 15 eligible retrofit technologies and funding available for third-party fleet energy assessments, medium- and heavy-duty fleets across Canada are taking meaningful steps to improve their fuel efficiency.

Canadian companies can also explore free resources for more efficient fleets through the SmartDriver training program and the SmartWay benchmarking program.
