Breakdown of energy use by functional area

A pie chart representing energy consumed in the average Canadian business is divided into seven sections: Space heating 55%; Water heating 8%; Auxiliary equipment 14%; Auxiliary motors 5%; Lighting 11%; Space cooling 6% and Street lighting 1%.

When buying commercial equipment, it is important to remember the cost of energy to operate a product over its lifetime is just as important as its purchase price. In fact, some of these products can differ in their energy use by 70%!

ENERGY STAR certified commercial heating and cooling equipment

Commercial heating or cooling equipment that is regulated

Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations establish minimum performance standards for energy efficiency and help eliminate the least efficient products from the Canadian marketplace.

The following ENERGY STAR certified commercial  heating and cooling equipment are subject to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations: commercial boilers, light air conditioners and heat pumps, and commercial gas water heaters that are storage or tankless.

Commercial internal water loop heat pump, commercial gas unit heaters, chillers, large air conditioners, heat pumps and condensing units, packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pumps, and single package vertical air conditioners and heat pumps are regulated but are NOT eligible for ENERGY STAR certification.

Heating and cooling products sized for residential use

Many business buy smaller sized heating equipment for residential use or cooling and ventilating equipment for residential use for their hotels, apartments, or smaller buildings. Always consider energy efficiency when buying these products and choose ones that are either regulated or eligible for ENERGY STAR certification in Canada.
