Unit heater technology and energy efficiency
Gas unit heaters are ductless, self-contained, automatically controlled, vented, gas-burning appliances that distribute warmed air without the use of ducts. They have a fan that circulates the air and are typically used in commercial settings.
There are high-efficiency models available. They use condensing technology and can operate at as much as 93 percent efficiency.
(There are some models marketed for residential application, e.g. heating a garage.)

Regulations set the energy efficiency minimum
All gas unit heaters for sale in Canada are subject to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations, which set a minimum performance standard for their energy efficiency. This helps keep the least efficient products off the Canadian market.
The current minimum standard is thermal efficiency of 80 percent or more. Also, the unit must be equipped with an intermittent ignition device and either: a power-vented system; automatic vent damper; or automatic flue damper.
