Climate resiliency
Increasing a home’s ability to cope with extreme climate events by adding adaptation measures.

Energy advisor
An energy advisor registered with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is a person who has met and maintained all of the required qualifications to deliver the EnerGuide Rating System.
EnerGuide Rating System
A program by NRCan that assesses and labels the energy performance of houses. It provides a standardized measure of a home’s energy efficiency, helping homeowners and builders make informed decisions about energy-saving improvements.
ENERGY STAR for New Homes
A standard indicating a new home is more efficient than average (approximately 20% more than those built to current building code requirements). It is a voluntary standard that is administered by NRCan and uses the EnerGuide Rating System to generate the label.
Energy efficiency
The practice of using less energy to perform the same task or produce the same result. This involves various strategies and technologies to reduce energy consumption, lower energy costs, cut emissions, and improve overall performance of homes.

Home labelling
An evaluation of a home’s energy performance. Provides and energy rating, energy use information, greenhouse gas emissions, typical costs, and steps to improve the energy efficiency of the home.

On-site energy assessment
A home energy assessment performed by an energy advisor who visits the home for the purposes of taking measurements and verifying house characteristics and calibrating an energy model.

U

Under-resourced
Individuals or groups that do not possess the necessary resources to access goods or services. In the context of home labelling, this can include low-income households, new Canadians, Indigenous populations and remote communities.

Virtual energy assessment
A home energy assessment performed using pre-existing information about a dwelling. In this type of assessment, a dwelling’s energy characteristics are estimates using information from third party databases, and optionally, information provided by a participating homeowner or by off-site inspection.
Virtual home label
A home label resulting from a virtual energy assessment.
