Sustainable jobs

Helping to build a prosperous and inclusive net-zero economy for all Canadians

The shift to a low-carbon economy represents an historic economic opportunity for Canada. The potential job growth from decarbonizing our traditional economy and creating new low-carbon industries is significant. The Royal Bank of Canada estimates that the shift to net-zero emissions could create up to 400,000 new jobs in Canada by the end of this decade alone.1

Through its Sustainable Jobs approach, the Government of Canada is putting people at the heart of its efforts to ensure Canadians – from workers and their communities to Indigenous Peoples and business owners – have the tools and supports they need to thrive in a net-zero future.

Canada is well-positioned to be a leader in the global low-carbon economy. For example, recent data indicates that Canadian exports of clean technology reached $17.9 billion in 2021,Footnote 2 marking a $3.2 billion increase from the year prior.

Canada’s emissions reduction plan for 2030 and its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 will create a wealth of new opportunities in a variety of vital sectors including:

  • Critical minerals and processing
  • Electricity
  • Electric vehicles and battery manufacturing
  • Renewable energy
  • Biofuels
  • Hydrogen
  • Nuclear
  • Sustainable forest products
  • Low-carbon buildings
  • Carbon capture, utilization and storage
  • Agriculture

With a highly skilled workforce; abundant energy and natural resources; and innovative industries, Canada can be a supplier of choice – in everything from clean technology, critical minerals, and sustainable forest products to renewable energy and clean fuels – while delivering good, well-paying, sustainable jobs for Canadians in every sector of the economy and every region of the country. The keys to our success must include collaboration and inclusion. That is why the Government’s approach to sustainable jobs puts Canadian workers and their communities at the centre, through meaningful engagement and consultation, to ensure that all Canadians can contribute to and participate in the low-carbon economy.

The Sustainable Jobs Partnership Council will meet with people from across Canada to hear their views as they work to provide independent advice to the Government on how it can best support workers and communities and advance low-carbon economic growth. More information on engagement opportunities with the Sustainable Jobs Partnership Council will be available once this body is established in the coming months.
