Learn About the Written Examination for EDO Certification

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) certifies exposure device operators. The Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) Non-Destructive Testing Certification Body (NDTCB) role is to serve as the qualifying body for the written examination for the CNSC's exposure device operator (EDO) certification.

An important step in becoming a certified exposure device operator (CEDO) is to register for and pass the EDO written examination. You can apply for and arrange this through the NRCan NDTCB. You will also need to provide CNSC with proof of appropriate vocational training. For information about training requirements, please contact CNSC.

Upon obtaining EDO certification from the CNSC, a photo ID card will be issued from the NRCan NDTCB and a separate certification card will be issued by CNSC with matching expiration timelines.

How to apply and what is required for initial EDO written examination

Before applying to the NRCan NDTCB to write the EDO written examination, you must complete all required prerequisites as set out in the PCP-09 Certified Exposure Device Operator Personnel Certification Guide. You can download the guide from the CNSC website.

If you are ready to apply for your EDO written examination, please go directly to apply for your exposure device operator written examination.

Please note: Email is the primary method of communication that the NRCan NDTCB uses to correspond with EDO applicants and candidates. The electronic written EDO examination is only available at approved EDO examination centres and other participating examination centres.

Re-examination

If your initial attempt to pass the EDO examination doesn’t succeed, you can attempt a re-examination. You should ensure there are at least 30 days between examination attempts. Candidates who are not successful after three attempts must repeat the vocational training program.
