Project Objectives

The project will demonstrate electric thermal storage (ETS) heater units as dispatchable and reliable electricity capacity. The project will evaluate the peak shifting effects as well as customer acceptance of utility-controlled heater units.

The project has the potential to provide 400kW of dispatchable capacity (sources of electricity that can be used on demand and dispatched at the request of power grid operators, according to market needs) with 6MWh of storage by charging off peak. This will help to decarbonize space-heating loads without contributing to winter peak demand.

Expected Results

The Project will demonstrate ETS units charging during off-peak using hydro energy and will dispatch during high peak periods off-setting fossil fuels, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There are many grids across Canada, especially those with intermittent renewables that could benefit from the integration of ETS units for peak shaving.

The results of the project will be used to assess the other decarbonization benefits of ETS, such as electrification and intermittent renewable integration, as well as to support similar systems in other northern communities.
