Project Objectives
The Nihtat Energy Ltd (NEL) is advancing a number of project concepts focused on developing and testing approaches to move beyond current renewable grid penetration limitations that would potentially restrict future development of renewables for Beaufort Delta communities. This includes working with Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) in 2020 to test fully the variable speed generator (VSG) technology already installed at the Aklavik diesel plant, by adding 150 kW AC of photovoltaic (PV) solar. The electricity produced will be sold to NTPC through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) arrangement, with NTPC paying its avoided diesel fuel cost for Project energy that is actually delivered and used on the Aklavik grid.
Expected Results
NEL’s implementation approach includes supporting Indigenous participation and building community knowledge on energy planning processes. This includes ensuring capacity building opportunities, by planning and delivery training related to PV solar installation to interested community members (including a session focused on providing training to women).
