Project Objectives
Nihtat Energy Ltd, an Indigenous owned and operated business, will implement this phased approach to renewable energy deployment in the Beaufort Delta Region. This project will add up to 150 kW of additional solar PV capacity in Aklavik, and support the installation of a grid-connected 1 MW solar PV project located in Inuvik. This project will contribute to an expanded microgrid at the Inuvik Satellite Station Facility in the Northwest Territories that will build capacity through hands-on experience, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve local air quality.
Expected Results
Expanding renewable energy capacity in the Beaufort Delta will provide access to training and employment opportunities, promote Indigenous energy sovereignty, and contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through partnership with the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, the additional solar PV capacity in the region will displace 1778 MWh of fossil fuel electricity per year, enough to power 165 homes. This innovative renewable energy project will serve as a model for sustainable development across the northern remote environment.
