Science supporting the 2 Billion Trees program

Graphic featuring tree planting and research related themes

Nature-based climate solutions

The Government of Canada established a Natural Climate Solutions Fund to address climate change and biodiversity loss. This horizontal initiative includes three separate but related programs:

  • Natural Resources Canada’s 2 Billion Trees (2BT) program
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Climate Solutions program

Research and knowledge supporting the 2BT program

The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) and other knowledge experts provide extensive information that can support the success of the 2BT program. Efforts have been made to address the needs of 2BT recipients and staff through the promotion of existing research and the mobilization of relevant, accessible science-based information through diverse formats and channels.

The 2BT program is investing in targeted research projects. This new research will:

  • address knowledge gaps
  • inform innovative practices to maximize carbon capture
  • optimize benefits for biodiversity and human well-being

Results of these research activities will provide up-to-date science to improve planting activities funded by the 2BT program.

Science to support tree planting

The CFS provides a collection of science-based knowledge products in support of tree planting-related activities. From seed operations to monitoring, tree planting requires careful planning to ensure the right tree is planted in the right place for the right reasons.
