Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to reduce the cost and improve the performance of electric motors used in electric vehicles (EV) ensuring a secure and cost-effective supply chain for motor materials through the development of new high-silicon electrical steels and rare-earth-element (REE) free magnets.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Make new vehicle ownership more affordable for Canadians by reducing electric motor production costs for hybrid and electric vehicles.
  2. Increase hybrid and electric vehicle use, cutting emissions from combustion, such as greenhouse gases and smog-forming pollutants.
  3. Improve Canadian competitiveness, boost local manufacturing, create jobs and economic growth, while supporting the growth of Canada’s clean technology sector.
  4. Stabilize Canada’s electric motor supply chain by reducing reliance on overseas materials.
  5. Enhance global competitiveness for automotive suppliers and manufacturers through lower-cost materials.
