Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to reduce the cost and improve the performance of electric motors used in electric vehicles (EV) ensuring a secure and cost-effective supply chain for motor materials through the development of new high-silicon electrical steels and rare-earth-element (REE) free magnets.
Expected Results
This project aims to:
- Make new vehicle ownership more affordable for Canadians by reducing electric motor production costs for hybrid and electric vehicles.
- Increase hybrid and electric vehicle use, cutting emissions from combustion, such as greenhouse gases and smog-forming pollutants.
- Improve Canadian competitiveness, boost local manufacturing, create jobs and economic growth, while supporting the growth of Canada’s clean technology sector.
- Stabilize Canada’s electric motor supply chain by reducing reliance on overseas materials.
- Enhance global competitiveness for automotive suppliers and manufacturers through lower-cost materials.
