Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to design, install and commission a wind and battery energy storage system to be integrated with the existing diesel microgrid in the community of Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Proponent will utilize two 1.5-MW wind turbines coupled with a battery energy storage system to provide a source of renewable energy with grid-forming battery for the isolated diesel-powered microgrid in Nain. The Proponent will optimize the system to maximize renewable energy generation to meet community electricity demand loads while maintaining a reliable and safe microgrid.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Replace diesel fuel with local sustainable energy in a northern and remote community, providing economic, social and environmental benefits to enhance community resilience.
  2. Increase community energy literacy, generate revenue from energy production, create local jobs, and reduce noise, greenhouse gas emissions and diesel spill risks.
