Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to design, install and commission a wind and battery energy storage system to be integrated with the existing diesel microgrid in the community of Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Proponent will utilize two 1.5-MW wind turbines coupled with a battery energy storage system to provide a source of renewable energy with grid-forming battery for the isolated diesel-powered microgrid in Nain. The Proponent will optimize the system to maximize renewable energy generation to meet community electricity demand loads while maintaining a reliable and safe microgrid.
Expected Results
This project aims to:
- Replace diesel fuel with local sustainable energy in a northern and remote community, providing economic, social and environmental benefits to enhance community resilience.
- Increase community energy literacy, generate revenue from energy production, create local jobs, and reduce noise, greenhouse gas emissions and diesel spill risks.
