Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to use Carbon Upcycling’s patented mechanically activated chemical exfoliation (MACE) technology to develop and validate novel carbon-negative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as alternatives to cement, expanding Canada’s portfolio of advanced building materials while reducing emissions from the sector.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Generate Canadian-owned IP and broad patent claims for materials under review.
  2. Reduce CO2 emissions and pollution associated with traditional cement manufacturing processes.
  3. Support the development of open standards to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon building materials in Canada.
  4. Establish Canada’s first fully integrated SCM and cement testing center for alternative building materials.
  5. Repurpose incinerator ash, clay, concrete waste, and mine tailings into valuable SCM.
