Project Background

The objective of this project was to improve understanding of territorial generation assets and optimal renewable energy penetration across Nunavut communities. It enabled the proponent to quickly assess the technical feasibility of renewable integration—whether through CIPP, net metering or IPPs—based on existing infrastructure, streamlining approvals and accelerating renewable energy adoption in Nunavut.

Results

This project aimed to:

  1. Support Nunavut’s transition from diesel-generated power to clean energy across 22 communities, contributing to Canada’s net-zero electricity goals.
  2. Deliver environmental and economic benefits to QEC customers approved for renewable integration projects onto the grid.
  3. Publish results to inform community-led project design, including system sizing to accelerate project development, approval and implementation.
  4. Inform the development of IPP policy and territorial regulations for Nunavut’s community grids.
