Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to enhance the performance and affordability of a novel saltwater flow battery by improving the power density, efficiency and manufacturability of its key battery components.
Expected Results
This project aims to:
- Enable the use of abundant, low-cost, and waste materials in long duration energy storage systems to improve grid reliability, address renewable energy intermittency, and enhance energy resilience in a changing climate.
- Collaborate with a Canadian University and research centre to generate Canadian IP and train highly qualified personnel in materials science, chemical and materials engineering, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain management.
- Scale up a Canadian-made salt-water flow battery for long duration storage using existing Canadian supply chains and membrane manufacturing processes.
- Create opportunities to recycle waste generated during Cathode Active Material (CAM) manufacturing of Lithium-ion batteries in Canada.
- Build capacity and develop expertise in energy research and technology solutions within academic institutions.
