Project Objectives

The objective of this project is a field trial of hydrogen storage in Canadian bedded and domal salts that will make data available to the public domain. New wellbores will be drilled, completed, and tested with high-pressure hydrogen in Fort Saskatchewan, AB and Robinson, NL with strategic potential for large-scale hydrogen storage.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Advance Canada’s efforts to utilize salt caverns for underground hydrogen storage.
  2. Establish Canada’s first hydrogen storage salt cavern, update codes and standards (CSA Z341), and develop a hydrogen containment protocol.
  3. Develop a data-driven software to optimize cavern design and operation.
  4. Unlock large-scale hydrogen storage market opportunities, required for balancing supply and demand, enhancing energy security, and facilitating energy export and trading.
  5. Provide stakeholders with field data and tools to enhance knowledge of safe and efficient hydrogen storage technologies.
