Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to demonstrate how vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric vehicle (EV) chargers can rapidly send stored energy back to the grid to help keep Alberta’s power system stable. By proving that aggregated EV batteries can reliably deliver ancillary services such as fast frequency response (FFR), it aims to open these grid-stability markets to a new class of distributed resource and to the utilities that can participate in them—deferring costly new infrastructure and lowering system costs.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Demonstrate that aggregated EV batteries can reliably deliver FFR to the grid.
  2. Open ancillary services markets, starting with FFR, to EV batteries as a new distributed resource for utilities.
  3. Help system operators and regulators develop the market rules needed to allow EV batteries to provide these services.
  4. Show that grid services at the distribution level can be faster and lower cost than traditional transmission or generation upgrades.
  5. Support the commercialization of next-generation bidirectional EV chargers for grid services.
  6. Share insights and multi-province learning (AB, BC, ON, NB) with operators, planners, and regulators. Create new revenue opportunities for industry players.
