Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to demonstrate a vertically integrated, low-greenhouse gas (GHG) Canadian solution for producing high-purity graphite for lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) used in electric vehicles (EVs). By eliminating traditional comminution and using a continuous electric furnace, the approach significantly reduces energy consumption. It also supports the Proponent’s partner, Weaver Energy, in bridging its midstream gap and advancing fully integrated North American graphite processing.

Expected Results

This project aims to:

  1. Reduce GHG emissions through a comminution-free, continuous electric furnace process.
  2. Strengthen Canada’s battery supply chain by producing domestically LiB-grade graphite with >99.95% purity.
  3. Generate engineering data to de-risk future Canadian graphite processing facilities.
  4. Enable mining companies to capture more value through advanced graphite purification technologies.
  5. Secure a reliable domestic supply of high-purity graphite for battery and EV manufacturers, reducing supply chain risks and dependence on imports.
  6. Enable commercialization of advanced purification processes, fostering innovation and strategic partnerships.
