Project Background

This project demonstrates scalable prototypes for medium and heavy-duty electric truck charging. The project also incorporated integrated controls that monitor truck charging, account for grid capacity, and provide a means of settlement.

As part of the project, electric charging infrastructure was installed to support 5 electric (yard) shunt trucks and numerous class 6-8 tractors and trucks.

The project also contributes to the establishment of new codes and standards.

Results

This demonstration project results in direct reductions in GHG emissions by replacing diesel medium and heavy-duty trucks with electric trucks. For truck operators, benefits also include fuel savings and reduced maintenance costs.

Benefits to Canada

Hydro One’s charging infrastructure demonstration for electric trucks serves as a model for other utilities and/or businesses interested in pursuing solutions to electrify heavy-duty transportation across Canada.

Next Steps

Participating fleets are focused on collecting performance data from electric trucks and charging infrastructure to inform future investment decisions and identify opportunities to expand EV deployments.
