Project Background

The main objective of this project was to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) ownership in the Yukon by demonstrating the all-season performance of public charging stations.

The focus was on integrating fast charging stations in the Yukon, however, the outcomes of the project benefit all northern regions of Canada.

Five Level III DC 480V EV fast chargers were purchased and installed in the Yukon. Two chargers were installed in the city of Whitehorse and individual chargers were also installed in Carcross, Marsh Lake and Haines Junction.

Chargers were monitored for their performance while operating in extreme cold temperatures.

Results

The project demonstrated that chargers work in cold climates. Charger uptime was consistent year-round and harsh winter conditions did not impact the functionality and reliability of the chargers.

The project and the increased availability of chargers also prompted Whitehorse auto dealers to begin selling plug-in and battery electric vehicles.

Benefits to Canada

The project demonstrated that transportation electrification is feasible in other remote northern communities, as the technology has proven to work effectively.

Next Steps

The Government of Yukon will encourage the further deployment of Level 2 chargers in its communities, as well as additional Level 3 chargers to enhance the resiliency of its charging network.
