Transportation electrification and fuel switching
Project location:CanmetENERGY Ottawa, Ottawa, ON
Timeline: 3 years (2019 to 2022)
Program: Transportation
Project description
This project is addressing knowledge gaps and technical barriers related to the suitability and economics of electric vehicles (EV), and the potential to defer or eliminate grid upgrades through smart charging and other innovations. We also seek to help electric utilities prepare for a fast-growing fleet of EVs.
We are conducting techno-economic studies to evaluate the feasibility of battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and internal combustion engine vehicles using renewable natural gas, in various transportation segments.
We are using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to understand charging behaviour and to forecast charging requirements, and are investigating innovative ways to provide charging in the most economical way.
In the scope of this project, we work with stakeholders conducting EV pilots, as well as electric utilities and industry organizations who are interested in the potential of EVs.
