Green Freight Program Applicant’s Guide: Stream 1

Eligibility criteria

Status: Open for applications.

Who’s eligible

All applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Green Freight Program (GFP) Stream 1 grant:

  1. Be an entity operating in Canada that has one or more heavy-duty vehicles for business use in its fleet that are licensed and insured to operate in Canada.
  2. Be one of these business types:
    • Company;
    • Industry association;
    • Research association;
    • Standards organization;
    • Indigenous and community group;
    • Canadian academic institution; and
    • Provincial, territorial, regional, or municipal government or their departments or agencies where applicable.

Ineligible applicants:

  • Softwood lumber companies and those that are vertically integrated with softwood lumber companies.
  • The renter of a commercial vehicle subject to a short-term rental agreement.

IMPORTANT: It is at the discretion of the Program to determine eligibility of funding recipients.

Eligible vehicles

Vehicles and/or trailers must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a Stream 1 grant:

  1. Be in service.
  2. Belong to an eligible weight class and a vehicle type which are listed in the tables below.

Eligible vehicles weight classes

Class 3 Between 4,536 kg and 6,350 kg
Class 4 Between 6,350 kg and 7,257 kg
Class 5 Between 7,257 kg and 8,845 kg
Class 6 Between 8,845 kg and 11,793 kg
Class 7 11,793 kg and 14,969 kg
Class 8 More than 14,969 kg

Eligible vehicle types

Ineligible vehicles:

Types of vehicles not eligible for funding include:

  • Sport utility vehicle (SUV);
  • Pickup trucks;
  • Public transit buses;
  • School buses;
  • Off-road vehicles used for recreational purposes;
  • Newly purchased vehicles equipped with the proposed retrofit device(s) at the time of delivery; and
  • All other vans that are not listed in the Eligible vehicles table.
