Gas boilers - commercial
Energy Efficiency Regulations
Regulatory definition
Commercial gas boiler, a boiler that uses exclusively propane or natural gas, is intended for application in a low-pressure steam, or hot water, central heating system and has an input rate of greater than or equal to 87.92 kW (300 000 Btu/h) but not more than 2,930.71 kW (10,000,000 Btu/h).
Compliance date
Commercial gas boilers that are manufactured on or after January 1, 2025.
For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations.
Testing standard

Energy efficiency regulations by province
Some provinces also have their own energy efficiency regulations for many of the federally regulated products – find out which ones!
Energy efficiency standard
Energy-using product | Requirements |
---|---|
Commercial gas boilers that are intended for hot water systems and have an input rate of ≥ 87.92 kW (300,000 Btu/h) but ≤ 732.68 kW (2,500,000 Btu/h) | Thermal efficiency of ≥ 90% |
Commercial gas boilers that are intended for hot water systems and have an input rate of > 732.68 kW (2,500,000 Btu/h) but ≤ 2,930.71 kW (10,000,000 Btu/h) | Combustion efficiency of ≥ 90% |
Commercial gas boilers that are intended for low pressure steam systems and have an input rate of ≥ 87.92 kW (300,000 Btu/h) but ≤ 732.68 kW (2,500,000 Btu/h) | Thermal efficiency ≥ 81% |
Commercial gas boilers that are intended for low pressure steam systems and have an input rate of > 732.68 kW (2,500,000 Btu/h) but ≤ 2,930.71 kW (10,000,000 Btu/h) | Thermal efficiency ≥ 82% |
