Free online training courses for the NECB 2017 and NECB 2020

Online training courses and videos to help users apply the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2017 are available for free in the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Store. NRCan, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and CSA Group have collaboratively developed online training materials targeted to contractors, designers and building officials. Increasing the construction community’s ability to implement the NECB 2017 will help increase the energy efficiency in buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. Free online training courses for the NECB 2020 will be available in Fall 2022.

Free instructor led training materials for the NECB 2017 and NECB 2020

Free, instructor-led training materials is available from Natural Resources Canada and the National Research Council. The materials are designed for instructors teaching building energy codes and students studying to become building officials, contractors, designers, technologists or engineers.

Two separate sets of training materials for designers and for contractors are available. Training material is intended for one day of virtual or in-class instruction and is available in French and English.

What’s included:

  • Participant’s guide – a course agenda, related training links, a course overview, and activity sheets (in .pdf and .docx)
  • Instructor’s guide – administrative responsibilities and course activity answer sheets (in .pdf and .docx)
  • Presentation slides – with professional graphics and notes.

The training materials are available with a signed licence agreement. NECB 2020 instructor led training materials will be available in Fall 2022.

Free online training course on NECB 2017 Compliance Modeling for Part 3 Buildings

Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) offers a free training course describing how to perform NECB 2017 Compliance Modeling for Part 3 Buildings in Canada using the IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) software. This self-paced online course is available for free on IES’ website.

Alliance of Canada Building Officials' Association (ACBOA)
ACBOA offers the National Certification Program for Professional Building Officials, allowing building officials to be officially certified, by accredited institutions, as competent and qualified professionals.

Benchmarking training resources
NRCan offers free ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager building energy benchmarking tools, information sessions, presentations and training webinars to help you better understand how to use the tool and get you started on the path toward improved energy performance.

British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) – School of Construction and the Environment
BCIT’s Sustainable Energy Management Advanced Certificate (SEMAC) is a part-time online program that teaches sustainable energy-management principles, approaches, techniques and tools.

Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA Canada)
This industry association offers training programs including

  • e-Energy Training for Building Operations – This online course teaches building operators and engineers how to lower energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in commercial and institutional buildings.
  • BOMA BEST® training – This is Canada’s largest environmental assessment and certification program for existing buildings.
  • BOMI Canada courses – BOMA Canada’s partner in education, the Building Owners and Managers Institute (BOMI) of Canada offers specialized courses and five designation programs: Real Property Administrator (RPA) for property managers, Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) for facilities professionals, System Maintenance Technician (SMT) for systems personnel, Systems Maintenance Administrator (SMA) for systems supervisors and High-Performance Sustainable Buildings (HP) for professionals responsible for implementing sustainable initiatives.

Canadian Institute for Energy Training (CIET)
CIET offers energy-management training for organizations and can provide Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) training and certification.

This school offers a comprehensive certificate program in Practical Energy and Advanced Knowledge - Buildings.

The Educational Program Innovations Centre (EPIC)
EPIC offers Canadian engineers and technology professionals a wide range of practical, onsite and online courses and seminars.

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society
This non-profit group offers Building Operator Training, Energy Awareness (EA) training and programs like Destination Conservation Saskatchewan, Efficiency for Organizations, Renewable Rides and K-12 Education Programs.

Seneca College (Toronto, ON)
Seneca offers several types of certification in Building Environmental Systems for managers, operators and technicians.

Southeast Regional College (Saskatchewan)
With support from the Saskatchewan Building Officials Association, Southeast offers Building Code Training for Canadians Series 1, 2010. This is a home-study program for building officials and anyone working with the National Building Code.

This internationally recognized energy-efficiency program offers tools, resources and training to help improve your organization’s energy performance.

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities
This not-for-profit association offers online and onsite training to professionals working on “living buildings” – those that capture and treat their water and generate their own energy with renewable resources.
