Fighting and Managing Wildfires in a Changing Climate Program

Starting in 2022-23, Natural Resources Canada and Indigenous Services Canada received $346.1 million over 5 years and $0.6 million ongoing to operationalize the Government of Canada’s commitment to make our communities safe and increase forest resilience to wildland fire.

This program supports training and the procurement of firefighting equipment to increase capacity for wildland fire management across Canada.

Program funding

Training fund

Status - CLOSED

Funding to train 1,000 new community-based firefighters, to reduce the risk from wildland fire and support community-based capacity.

Equipment fund

Status - CLOSED

Funding to support the efforts of provinces and territories to strengthen capacities and capabilities in wildland fire management across Canada by procuring specialized wildland firefighting equipment.

Climate change is increasing the frequency, intensity, and severity of wildland fires in Canada. Annual national costs for fighting wildland fire total over $1 billion. In addition to the direct costs for suppression and response, indirect costs such as property loss and damages, business and industry disruptions, and recovering or rebuilding critical infrastructure and services average around $500 million per year, and can be higher during seasons with more fire activity.

Funding from this program supports a whole-of-government approach to emergency management by providing funding to Provinces, Territories and Indigenous communities for wildland fire preparedness, mitigation and response.
