Specification changes

How and why

As manufacturers make more energy-efficient products, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and international partners such as Natural Resources Canada update the technical specifications for ENERGY STAR^® qualification.

These changes often set the efficiency bar higher, resulting in even greater energy and cost savings.

ENERGY STAR specifications may change if:

• market penetration of ENERGY STAR qualified models increases significantly
• federal minimum energy performance standards change
• new technology allows manufacturers to make the product more energy efficient
• availability of the product is limited nation-wide
• energy savings are less than expected
• performance or quality issues arise
• issues arise around test procedures

The ENERGY STAR name and symbol are administered and promoted in Canada by Natural Resources Canada and are registered in Canada by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
