Partial upgrading development
Project location: CanmetENERGY Ottawa, Ottawa, ON
Timeline: 3 years (2019 to 2022)
Program: Oil and Gas
Project description
We are performing proof-of-concept testing on a novel partial upgrading approach in our Partial Upgrading Development Lab (PUDL). Our objective is to minimize or eliminate hydrogen as an input requirement, in favour of methane-based free radicals, thus lowering the cost and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with upgrading bitumen and heavy oils. Our testing will determine the optimal operating conditions for this approach, allowing us to then perform the necessary techno-economic assessments to determine its suitability for oil sands applications. We are collaborating with industry to provide product specifications and techno-economic evaluations.
Another aspect of this project involves researching other technologies that produce low GHG emitting hydrogen through unconventional pathways. This is important, as hydrogen is an important feedstock to conventional partial and full upgrading processes.
