Our Tailings research and development (R&D) is focused on dewatering oil sands tailings and the management of oil sands tailings ponds.

Our areas of focus

CanmetENERGY Devon’s Tailings R&D program focuses on the geomechanical and geochemical dewatering of tailings solids and the treatment of Oil Sands Process Water (OSPW) by:

developing and assessing physical and chemical treatments to transform fluid fine tailings (FFT) into trafficable and productive reclaimed landscapes
investigating the treatment and long-term impacts of OSPW, and the reclamation of tailings ponds
examining innovative and environmentally-friendly remediation methods and monitoring tools
assessing how OSPW may be treated to mitigate methane generation and to reduce dissolved chemical concentrations
