Guidelines for the use of the ENERGY STAR name and marks

These guidelines were developed to assist Canadian organizations that own or manage ENERGY STAR® certified buildings in the proper use of the ENERGY STAR marks and name in order to promote the ENERGY STAR brand while demonstrating a building’s superior energy performance. For detailed instructions, consult the ENERGY STAR Canada Brand Book.

The ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® names and the ENERGY STAR symbol are trademarks registered in Canada by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and are administered and promoted by Natural Resources Canada. Only organizations authorized by Natural Resources Canada have permission to use the ENERGY STAR marks and name.

Quick tips:

  •  The ENERGY STAR name should always appear in all capital letters and as two words.
  •  The registration symbol (®) must be used the first time the words “ENERGY STAR” appear, and the registration symbol should then be repeated in a document for each chapter title or web page.
  •  There should be no space between the words “ENERGY STAR” and the registration symbol (®), which should always be written in superscript.
  •  The coloured certification mark is preferred and should always appear as 100% cyan.
  •  The marks can be resized, as long as proportions are the same and the text is legible.
  •  The ENERGY STAR name should always precede the Portfolio Manager name the first time the words appear.
  •  The registration symbol (®) must be used after both ENERGY STAR and Portfolio Manager the first time that either one of them appears in a heading/title and then in the text (i.e., ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®)
  •  ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager should never be portrayed as an acronym (e.g., PM or ESPM).

Year-Specific Certification Mark tips:

logo

  •  The digital format of the year-specific certification mark can only be used in reference to a certified building (e.g., content feature articles, building descriptions etc.,) and should not be used near, or in reference to, non-certified buildings or facilities or to imply that all buildings owned by an organization are certified.
  •  The year-specific certification mark decal can only be used on a window or door facing the exterior of the certified building.
  •  The certification mark cannot be used in an organization’s name, or logo, or by employees or building owners of a certified building.
  •  The certification mark is not a promotional mark and cannot be used to imply participation in the program or to advertise the program.
  •  The certification mark should not be used near non-certified buildings in advertisements or other promotional materials.
