The Home Depot Canada

An ENERGY STAR Canada Participant since 2001, The Home Depot Canada is one of the country’s biggest home improvement retailers, with 182 stores across the country. The Home Depot caters to “do-it-yourselfers”, as well as home improvement, construction and building maintenance professionals. Through its commitment to sustainability, the company recognizes ENERGY STAR as a trusted brand whose familiar symbol lends credibility to the store’s energy-efficient products. Throughout The Home Depot Canada’s stores, consumers can find a wide array of ENERGY STAR certified products including appliances, commercial products, electronics, windows and doors, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) equipment, and lighting.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Supported innovation and provided a wide range of ENERGY STAR products in all categories to increase market penetration and meet evolving consumer trends. One example is the new ENERGY STAR certified light bulb lineup which aims to create lighting that is easier on the eyes over prolonged use.
  • Established a partnership with Enbridge Gas on the Enbridge Smart Thermostat Program, providing instant rebates to eligible customers on the purchase of ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats.
  • Increased promotion of ENERGY STAR by promoting Canada’s Greener Homes Grant across the country.
  • Established a partnership with BC Hydro on their Power Smart Shop that highlights energy-efficient products with specific recognition of ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Participated in Natural Resources Canada’s ‘12 Days of ENERGY STAR’ campaign resulting in heavy social media coverage for Natural Resources Canada.
  • Increased ENERGY STAR brand management by monitoring and ensuring accuracy of ENERGY STAR content on The Home Depot Canada website, in digital flyers, and in-store signage.

LG Electronics Canada Inc.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Increased investment in energy-efficient innovation resulting in a 31% increase of ENERGY STAR certified home appliance models in the Canadian market, including the introduction of a new lineup providing small-space solutions for Canadians.
  • Highlighted ENERGY STAR certified products in several extensive marketing campaigns, including the national Connected Home campaign. Through paid collaboration with various influencers, LG was able to achieve millions of views and high consumer awareness about the program in Canada.
  • Partnered with national retailers such as The Home Depot Canada, The Brick and Best Buy Canada to promote LG's ENERGY STAR certified products through co-marketing campaigns and promotions to generate further sales and distribution of ENERGY STAR products.
  • Delivered comprehensive retail training programs through in-store, online and application training, which resulted in over 13,000 representatives trained on the benefits of ENERGY STAR.

True Refrigeration Canada ULC

True Refrigeration is a leading manufacturer of commercial refrigeration systems and kitchen restaurant equipment that strives to manufacture products that not only qualify but also set the standard for what ENERGY STAR certified products should be. True wishes to lead the way to even greater energy efficiency by reducing its carbon footprint and committing to responsible and sustainable manufacturing.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Significantly increased the number of ENERGY STAR certified models from 83 in 2020 to 248 in 2021.
  • Developed the utilization of eco-friendly and efficient hydrocarbon refrigerants for the commercial refrigeration market, with 100% of their certified models containing these new refrigerants.
  • Developed a new section of their web page to highlight ENERGY STAR certified product models, some of the most efficient in their category.
  • Increased engagement with their dealer network to educate the sales force on the value of ENERGY STAR.

  • Underwent a product line consolidation to refine their offerings for the Canadian marketplace, simplifying the consumer selection process and providing the best match for their needs.
  • Pursued ENERGY STAR certification for all new print product introductions, a critical product line for their marketing strategy.
  • Increased web traffic on their pages that included ENERGY STAR references, resulting in a 45% increase from 2019 to 2021.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR with their customers and employees through customer collateral, sales presentations, training sessions and product brochures.

Manufacturer of the Year–Windows and Doors–2022
JELD-WEN® of Canada

Manufacturing in Canada for more than 26 years, JELD-WEN continues to offer homeowners a full line of window and door products across the country at every price point. JELD-WEN of Canada, a subsidiary of JELD-WEN Holding, Inc., manufactures three regionally specific window and door collections out of their manufacturing facilities located in Manitoba, Ontario, and in Quebec. The company also operates an interior door manufacturing facility in Quebec and a distribution centre in New Brunswick.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Increased offering of ENERGY STAR certified products available in Canada by 26% over 2020.
  • Launched a brand awareness campaign to inform and educate Canadians on the benefits of its ENERGY STAR certified product models. The campaign reached over 13M Canadians.
  • Updated its “Keep outside out” and Canadian website with valuable information for homeowners including additional ENERGY STAR related content while also updating energy-efficiency calculator tools to include information about provincial and federal rebate programs.
  • Increased sales of ENERGY STAR certified stock windows with its largest Canadian retail partner by over 54% over 2020.

Emerson

Emerson, a global automation technology and software company, offers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls, including the Sensi smart thermostat solution. Emerson Sensi stepped up efforts to promote the value of ENERGY STAR through social media platforms, with more than 1.6 million impressions and 7,200 engagements.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Increased the number of ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat models for sale in Canada by 25% in 2021 over 2020.
  • Promoted environmental awareness through the "Plant a Tree" marketing campaign on Earth Day where one tree was planted for every ENERGY STAR certified thermostat sold during the campaign.
  • Participated in and promoted Natural Resources Canada’s ‘12 Days of ENERGY STAR’ campaign, donating 12 Sensi smart thermostats, promoting the campaign through social media and with all employees across Canada.
  • Partnered with five utilities in their marketing campaigns to promote rebates to install ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats.
  • Increased retail displays by 40%, e-commerce visits by 28%, and social media presence of the Sensi smart thermostat by 36% in 2021 over 2020.

Manufacturer of the Year–Lighting–2022
SEG Products

Montréal-based SEG Products, designs, develops, and manufactures a wide range of lighting products under its L’Image Home Products division, bringing affordable, energy-efficient lighting products to a variety of retail channels across North America. L’Image is a proud and engaged ENERGY STAR Participant in Canada, striving to increase ENERGY STAR awareness through effective product design, trustworthy customer relationships and creative marketing.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Redesigned several of their product models to improve energy efficiency resulting in ENERGY STAR certified models representing 31% of overall sales.
  • Developed and certified three new lamps and luminaires.
  • Maintained an active and engaged social media presence with their 4500+ followers where they prominently displayed ENERGY STAR messaging, including participation in the ‘12 Days of ENERGY STAR’ campaign, Earth Day and ENERGY STAR Day.
  • Hosted meetings with large Canadian retailers to highlight the impact of ENERGY STAR certified products and how they contribute to a greener, more energy informed world while saving customers money.

Corbeil Appliances

Corbeil Appliances has been part of the appliance industry since 1949 and in 2017 became a Canadian-owned company with 24 stores in Quebec and Ontario. Corbeil is the largest regional retailer specializing exclusively in household appliances, offering customers an impressive selection of more than 100 top-quality brands.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Increased the number of Corbeil Green Days events, both in-store and online. These events educated and provided increased awareness for customers about the benefits of choosing ENERGY STAR certified appliances.
  • Collaborated with influencers on innovative marketing campaigns across social media, radio and other media to reach and engage the 25-55 year-old market segment.
  • Contextualized the benefits of choosing ENERGY STAR certified appliances through a more qualitative and human approach in their marketing campaigns. This new approach resulted in positive engagement rates, as their customers were able to understand and relate to the real world benefits of certified products in their day-to-day lives.

Lowe's Canada

Lowe's Canada stands out among Canadian retailers through its consistent focus on taking concrete actions for the environment. Among its many green initiatives, the company makes it a priority to promote ECO products, which include ENERGY STAR products. Drawing on one of the three prongs of its sustainable strategy to help its customers to reduce their environmental footprint, Lowe’s Canada dedicates numerous efforts to raise awareness on the benefits of energy-efficient products. Lowe’s Canada gives ENERGY STAR products great visibility in its 450 Lowe’s, RONA and Reno-Depot corporate and affiliated stores, contributing to the fight against climate change.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Sold more than 2.8 million ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Trained over 4,800 store associates on eco-friendly products, including on the benefits of the ENERGY STAR certification.
  • Participated in the Canada Greener Homes Grant, offering grants on ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR certified products in stores, flyers, online and on social media to encourage consumers to reduce their energy consumption. Their advertising campaign featuring ENERGY STAR certified products generated 14 million impressions in Canada.

Utility Program of the Year–2022
takeCHARGE (Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro)

A joint initiative, takeCHARGE combines the expertise and customer reach of Newfoundland and Labrador’s two electricity utilities: Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. These utility partners work together to bring energy efficiency awareness and rebate programs to everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador. takeCHARGE provides a one-stop-shop for everything residents and businesses need to know about energy efficiency.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Offered at-the-cash rebates on a variety of ENERGY STAR certified products at 56 retail locations.
  • Offered incentives through its Instant Rebate Program on ENERGY STAR certified LED light bulbs, dehumidifiers, light fixtures, ceiling fans and air purifiers. The rebate amount for ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifiers was increased from $10 to $20 per unit.
  • Donated over 21,000 ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs to 24 non-profit organizations and charities across Newfoundland and Labrador through the Make the Switch LED Giveaway Program. Partnership with The Single Parents Association provided free ENERGY STAR certified LED light bulbs to help make homes more energy efficient.
  • Through the Business Efficiency Program, takeCHARGE provided over $3,500 in incentives on approximately 450 ENERGY STAR certified LED light bulbs.
  • Provided outreach and education on energy-efficient products through the Isolated Direct Install Program to home and business owners in the 41 remote diesel-system communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Provided 56 school presentations across the province to educate 1,883 grade K-6 students about energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR certified products.

Stirling Marathon

Stirling Marathon is a Canadian family-owned manufacturer of specialty home appliances in North America, including a full line of chest and upright freezers, compact and mid-sized refrigerators, electric ranges and built-in wine and beverage coolers, all under the Stirling, Marathon and Epic brands. The company puts energy efficiency at the forefront with their passion to develop, design and manufacture appliances in Ontario.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Continued to expand their ENERGY STAR Most Efficient product offerings.
  • Participated in private and public housing projects, where many of the fridges selected were their ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models.
  • Offered digital support to their retail partners to leverage ENERGY STAR certified and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2021 products.
  • Educated retailers using various tools, including infographics and in-store training to outline the many desirable features and benefits of their ENERGY STAR certified and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2021 products.

Energy Efficiency Program Administrator of the Year–2022
Advocate of the Year–2022

The Government of Prince Edward Island founded efficiencyPEI in 2008 to increase energy efficiency across the province. The organization is committed to providing Islanders with advice and programs that will promote sustainable energy use and reinforce the importance of sound energy management for the economic, social and environmental well-being of Island residents and businesses.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Installed ENERGY STAR certified products for 800 low-income islanders as part of the Winter Warming Program.
  • Increased participation by 30% in the Home Insulation Rebate program, providing rebates on ENERGY STAR certified windows and doors, air sealing and building envelope insulation.
  • Increased participation by 15% in the Energy Efficiency Equipment Rebate (EEER) program with over 6,000 pieces of ENERGY STAR certified equipment installed, including boilers, mini-split heat pumps and heat recovery ventilators (HRVs).
  • Completed two instant savings campaigns, which provided in-store rebates on over 41,000 ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Through a partnership with Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation, provided free energy audits to 191 homes, all receiving Winter Warming Program services including comprehensive air sealing and the installation of ENERGY STAR certified lighting. Twelve homes received the installation of ENERGY STAR certified equipment.

Promotional Campaign of the Year–2022
Efficiency Manitoba

Launched in April 2020, Efficiency Manitoba is a Crown corporation committed to achieving significant annual energy savings targets by offering cost-effective programs and services to Manitobans. It has a mandate to develop and support energy efficiency initiatives that will reduce provincial consumption of electricity by 1.5% and natural gas by 0.75% annually. Efficiency Manitoba helps Manitobans save energy, money, and the environment.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Offered post-sale rebates for ENERGY STAR certified appliances and smart thermostats through the SAVE MORE rebate campaign.
  • Partnered with 113 retailers to promote the SAVE MORE rebate campaign both on retailer websites and through a variety of marketing materials.
  • Promoted the SAVE MORE rebate campaign in two utility bill inserts and two magazines that were circulated to over 300,000 Manitobans.
  • Cross-promoted the ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator rebate offer with their Appliance Recycling Program to generate even more energy savings and environmental benefits.
  • Promoted the ENERGY STAR brand and ENERGY STAR certified products on social media and their website, including six published articles about the benefits of the ENERGY STAR brand.

This is Efficiency Manitoba’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Through their partnership with ENERGY STAR, Samsung is committed to core technologies and innovations that have a profound and positive impact on the spaces in which we live, and the environment.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Expanded range of ENERGY STAR certified appliances with an additional 28 SKUs last year.
  • Collaborated with Efficiency Manitoba to raise awareness and provide incentives to consumers who purchased ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Amplified ENERGY STAR initiatives via social media channels, including participation in the '12 Days of ENERGY STAR' campaign, Efficiency Manitoba’s rebate program as well as their 2021 ENERGY STAR Award.
  • Continued to train employees and in-store retail sales associates of ENERGY STAR certified products and their features.
  • Highlighted Samsung ENERGY STAR certified appliances prominently at national retailer partner stores across Canada with In-Store POP materials.

Columbia Manufacturing Co. Ltd.

Making residential and commercial skylights since 1961, Columbia Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is Canada’s largest skylight manufacturer with products available for sale in all provinces and territories of Canada. Columbia offers ENERGY STAR certified dual and triple glazing on all its skylight models – fixed or venting skylights, standard or custom sized.

An ENERGY STAR Canada Participant for more than a decade, Columbia supports sustainability by reducing its environmental footprint through the recycling of raw materials, eliminating over-packaging, lean manufacturing techniques, and by producing energy-efficient products that meet ENERGY STAR requirements.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Developed a new customer information and educational website, created exclusively to promote Columbia’s ENERGY STAR certified product line.
  • Increased social media presence across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn, including a weeklong special promotion to celebrate ENERGY STAR Day. Half of Columbia’s social media posts during 2021 were related to ENERGY STAR.
  • Partnered with major big box stores, including The Home Depot Canada, Lowe's Canada and Rona, on promoting ENERGY STAR certified triple glazed skylights in-store and online.
  • Printed over 50,000 copies of various publications promoting ENERGY STAR glazing options in circulation (price lists, brochures, flipbooks, etc.).

ENERGY STAR Canada Awards for New Homes

Builder of the Year–Small size–2022
Terra View Custom Homes Ltd.

Terra View Homes has been pioneering green homebuilding practices in Canada for almost two decades and actively building ENERGY STAR certified homes since 2006. They have promoted ENERGY STAR extensively through their online and social media channels. Terra View Homes aims to promote, educate, advise and encourage existing and prospective homeowners to invest in or develop a greater understanding of energy-efficient homes.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Attained Net Zero, Net Zero Ready, or ENERGY STAR certification for all built homes.
  • Received media recognition for their commitment to sustainable construction and green building practices.
  • Launched a green marketing campaign via Facebook and Instagram TV to provide current and prospective homeowners with the guidance, expertise and knowledge to better operate their energy-efficient homes.
  • Contributed to education and awareness by hosting students from the University of Guelph and local elementary schools at their Net Zero model home to learn about ENERGY STAR, Net Zero standards and green building.
  • Received the Awards of Distinction 2020-2021 Green Builder of the Year from the Guelph and District Home Builders’ Association.

Huron Creek Developments

Huron Creek Developments is a leader in innovation of new home construction and community development. All of Huron Creek’s homes are ENERGY STAR certified and they actively promote their ENERGY STAR certified homes through a wide range of diversified marketing activities, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and other platforms. They take pride in communicating the benefits of an ENERGY STAR certified home to current and future homeowners.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Attained ENERGY STAR certification for all homes built.
  • Recognized by Building Knowledge Canada for building practices and consistent airtightness levels.
  • Increased community awareness at their Westwood Village Preserve Site by creatively transforming a shipping container into a visually appealing promotional billboard promoting ENERGY STAR for New Homes.
  • Created an interactive virtual self-guided tour of their ENERGY STAR homes, highlighting the standard ENERGY STAR features available.
  • Received EnerQuality’s ENERGY STAR for New Homes – Mid Volume Builder award.

Building of the Year–Multifamily Housing–2022
2001 Bonnymede Drive

2001 Bonnymede Drive, built in 1975, is a multifamily condominium consisting of three low-rise buildings located in Mississauga, Ontario's Clarkson neighbourhood.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Electricity sub-metering was installed on both the 120 V and 220 V supply in and for every unit after extensive consultation with experts and owners as well as retrofitted and installed energy efficient lighting and mechanical equipment.
  • Continuation of resident communication and awareness, which was enhanced with participation in the provincial Energy and Water Benchmarking and Reporting.

This is 2001 Bonnymede Drive’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Building of the Year–Office–2022
Brian Canfield Centre

The Brian Canfield Centre located at 3777 Kingsway and owned by H&R REIT, Crestpoint Real Estate Investments Ltd. and Vestcor Inc. was originally built in 1976, with the Tower 2 addition added in 1986. The Brian Canfield Centre is an office building in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Direct digital control schedule adjustments were made on heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and lighting systems to reflect building occupancy.
  • Fine tuned HVAC equipment programming to improve building comfort and performance.

This is Brian Canfield Centre’s second ENERGY STAR Canada award (2021, 2022).

351 King Street East

Recently built in 2016, 351 King Street East is primarily an office building located in Toronto, Ontario that is owned by First Gulf.

  • Implemented curtailment procedures during peak demand periods, including non-essential equipment shutdowns and setting back of temperature levels.
  • Worked on building automation system controls to improve pump staging and operations systems.

55 Commerce Valley Drive West in Markham, Ontario was constructed in 2000 and is an eight-floor office building owned by Soneil Investments.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Various lighting fixtures upgraded to LED on three floors and will continue to upgrade light fixtures on more floors in coming years.
  • Optimized air side free cooling through building automation systems control strategies.

This is 55 Commerce Valley Drive West’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Commerce South Office Park—Building B

Commerce South Office Park – Building B is an A Class office property owned by Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada and managed by BentallGreenOak.  It is located at 8657 51st Avenue in Edmonton, Alberta and was built in 1982.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Performed LED retrofits and energy audits.

This is Commerce South Office Park - Building B’s third ENERGY STAR Canada award (2018, 2021, 2022).

Sun Life Waterloo King

Sun Life Waterloo King, located on the border of Kitchener and Waterloo in Ontario is a single tenant office complex owned by Concert Realty Services Ltd. and managed by BentallGreenOak.  This unique office complex is a building composed of nine major constructions; all built between 1912-1986.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Installed variable-frequency drive motors.

This is Sun Life Waterloo King’s second ENERGY STAR Canada award (2021, 2022).

Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital

Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital, opened in 1982, is the largest tertiary care hospital in New Brunswick and is the primary health care referral centre for this area and to all New Brunswickers for major trauma and cardiac care.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Performed chiller plant optimization via sequence of operation changes and performed measurement and verification of the Phase II stack economizer project.
  • An energy management culture that prioritizes reducing energy consumption as part of the daily operations while maintaining standards and patient comfort levels.

This is Horizon’s Saint John Regional Hospital’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Bliss Carman Middle School, Anglophone West School District

Bliss Carman Middle School located in Fredericton, New Brunswick was built in 2009 with energy efficiency in mind.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Upgraded cafeteria lighting and used ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® to understand, benchmark and monitor progress of changes in the school’s energy use and provide visual feedback of successes.
  • Used heat recovery systems and state-of-the-art building management controls to incorporate energy management as part of their day-to-day operations, and with the help of the school's custodians, staff and students.

This is Bliss Carman Middle School’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Sunrise of Windsor

Sunrise of Windsor is a senior living community in Windsor, Ontario.  Built in 2001, they provide assisted living, memory loss care, short-term stays and respite care.

Key 2021 accomplishments include:

  • Diligent monitoring and maintenance practices along with efficient systems.

This is Sunrise of Windsor’s second ENERGY STAR Canada award (2021, 2022).
