Gas boilers - household
Energy Efficiency Regulations
Regulatory definition
Gas boiler, a boiler that uses exclusively propane or natural gas, is intended for application in a low pressure steam, or hot water, central heating system and has an input rate of less than 87.92 kW (300 000 Btu/h)
Compliance date
Household gas boilers manufactured on or after January 15, 2021 and intended for low pressure steam systems.
Household gas boilers, other than those intended for low pressure steam systems, manufactured on or after July 1, 2023.
For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations.

Energy efficiency standard
Energy performance standard for household gas boilers | ||
---|---|---|
Energy-using product | AFUE | Requirements |
Household gas boilers that are intended for low pressure steam systems | ≥ 82% | No continuously burning pilot light Standby power ≤ 8 W Off-mode power ≤ 8 W |
Household gas boilers that are intended for hot water systems | ≥ 90% | No continuously burning pilot light Standby power ≤ 9 W Off-mode power ≤ 9 W |
Household gas boilers that are intended for hot water systems and do not have tankless domestic water heating coils | ≥ 90% | No continuously burning pilot light Equipped with automatic water temperature adjustment device and not operable without the device Standby power ≤ 9 W Off-mode power ≤ 9W |
AFUE = Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency
