Room air conditioners—EnerGuide

The mandatory EnerGuide label

The energy efficiency of a room air conditioner is measured by its energy efficiency ratio (EER): the higher the number, the more efficient the model.

A room air conditioner’s mandatory EnerGuide label shows the model type and its EER. It also uses a pointer to show where that value falls on a scale of energy efficiency for similar models. Use this value and scale to compare room air conditioners.

The EnerGuide label also identifies the model as louvred (a window unit) or non-louvred (a through-the-wall unit) and displays its cooling capacity in Btu/h.

The EnerGuide label may incorporate the ENERGY STAR® symbol for qualified models.

There are five main items displayed on the label

  1. Energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the room air conditioner model.
  2. Range of EERs available for similar models (same type and similar cooling capacity)
  3. EER indicator, which positions the model compared with the most efficient and least efficient models in the same class
  4. Type ( louvred or non-louvred) and cooling capacity in Btu/h.
  5. Model number of the unit
