Central air conditioners—EnerGuide

The voluntary EnerGuide label

The energy efficiency of a central air conditioner is measured by its seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER): the higher the number, the more efficient the model.

A central air conditioner’s voluntary EnerGuide label displays the model type and SEER. It also uses a pointer to show where that value falls on a scale of energy efficiency for similar models. (In brochures that refer to more than one model or size, there may be more than one pointer on the scale.) Use this value and scale to compare central air conditioners.

The EnerGuide label may be beside the ENERGY STAR® symbol for certified models.

  1. the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of the central air conditioner model.
  2. the range of SEERs available for similar models (same type and similar cooling capacity)
  3. the indicator, which positions the model compared with the most efficient and least efficient models in the same class
