Request for Information on Methane Centre of Excellence

Status: Request for information closed November 1, 2022

The Government of Canada has committed to developing a global centre of excellence on methane detection and elimination. Federal departments have been working in partnership to shape options for this new centre and wish to invite perspectives on the opportunities it presents.

Internationally, momentum has been building around initiatives targeting methane measurement, verification, reporting and mitigation. Canada was among the first countries to sign on to the Global Methane Pledge in fall 2021, and is well positioned to advance measures that support emission abatement domestically and abroad. Canada also announced the release of a Methane Strategy on September 23, 2022 to provide a pathway to further reduce methane emissions from across the economy while supporting Canadian technology and creating good-paying jobs.

Information sought

This Request for Information (RFI) seeks written feedback from all interested parties to help understand more fully the potential impacts and benefits of a global centre of excellence on methane detection and elimination. This includes input from individuals and groups, especially those with a particular perspective or experience related to methane emission measurement, verification, reporting and mitigation.

Some questions to respond to in this context include:

  1. What challenges is Canada facing with respect to addressing methane emissions that could be aided by a centre of excellence?
  2. What Canadian expertise, tools, and technologies do you see as most valuable in addressing domestic and/or global efforts related to methane emissions?
  3. In what ways might you participate in or benefit from a centre of excellence on methane detection and elimination?
  4. What outputs, which could be accessed through a centre of excellence, would be most valuable to you?
