Zibi District Thermal System

Lead Proponent:   Zibi Community Utility LP (Services d’Énergie de Quartier Zibi SEC)
Location:  Gatineau, QC
EIP Contribution: $ 1 M
Project Total: $ 5.4 M
Strategic Area:  Energy Efficient Buildings and Communities

Project Objectives:

The objective of the Project is to implement Phase 1 of a 4th generation zero-carbon district thermal system (‘DTS’). The DTS will recover post-industrial waste heat from the adjacent Kruger tissue mill to use for residential and commercial space heating in the adjacent Zibi development.
The Project is anticipated to provide a significant GHG reduction compared to district heating systems reliant on fossil fuels, targeting 40T by Project completion and 41kT by 10 years post-completion.

Expected Results:

The Zibi DTS will serve as a replicable demonstration of technology to utilize post-industrial -based heating system, helping the Zibi development achieve its goal of zero carbon and demonstrating that it is possible to transition today to a low carbon economy.
Finally, the Project will provide local employment and economic benefits, including training of HQP, and will stimulate economic growth in the Canadian technology and renewable energy sectors as Canadian engineering firms and Canadian suppliers of the main system components demonstrate their expertise and products.
