Project Outcomes

As part of the Impact Canada The Sky’s the Limit Challenge, Carbon Engineering successfully demonstrated its AIR TO FUELSTM technology that converts atmospheric carbon dioxide, water, and green electricity into ultra-low carbon fuels. The project uses the technology to produce clean, drop-in compatible and ultra-low carbon intensity sustainable aviation fuel with minimal impacts on land and water resources. The project identifies pathways to decarbonize aviation including SAF made from their AIR TO FUELSTM solution and permanent removal from direct air capture sequestration.

Carbon Engineering’s AIR TO FUELSTM solution has three major steps:

  • Step 1: the Direct Air Capture process captures and concentrates CO2 from atmospheric air;
  • Step 2: Clean electricity (such as solar PV) is used to electrolyze water, splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen;
  • Step 3: The CO2 and hydrogen are reacted to produce hydrocarbons which can directly, or with refining, be converted into drop-in compatible gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Carbon Engineering’s AIR TO FUELSTM approach integrates these steps and delivers efficiency improvements across the whole process.

Currently, Carbon Engineering is partnering with 1PointFive to engineer the first large-scale, commercial Direct Air Capture facility using Carbon Engineering’s Direct Air Capture technology.

“The cleantech and clean aviation ecosystem is led by a thriving community of passionate people from international and interdisciplinary backgrounds. Decarbonizing our energy and aviation systems poses significant challenges, but also amazing opportunities to solve complex global issues. Here at Carbon Engineering, we see significant pathways to decarbonize aviation, including SAF made from our AIR TO FUELSTM solution, and permanent carbon removal from Direct Air Capture to sequestration.” – The team at Carbon Engineering
