Near Net Zero Energy Supermarket

Lead Proponent: Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc.
Location: Stouffville, ON
CEI Contribution: $ 1,440,000
Project Total: $ 11,061,922
Strategic Area: Energy Efficient Buildings and Communities

Project Objectives:

The overall objective of the project is to design, build and operate a sustainable supermarket with a goal of Near Net Zero Energy (NZE). The project aims to set an example for the supermarket sector in Canada to achieve clean and efficient energy consumption and GHG emissions reductions.

Supermarkets in Canada have high heating and cooling loads due to Canada’s varied climate and geography. This makes reducing GHG emissions and energy use in supermarkets very challenging. Some Net Zero Energy supermarkets are being attempted globally; however, they are in more favorable climates.

Expected Results:

Nearing completion, Longos Stouffville Sustainable Supermarket - Opening November 1st, 2018

The key outcome of this project is the introduction of Canadian grocery retailers to the method of designing NZE supermarkets, which will lead to the proliferation of low carbon solutions in supermarkets throughout Canada.

This first of its kind supermarket in Canada would aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 1,333 tonnes of eCO2 each year by deploying CO2 refrigeration. Energy conservation and renewable generation measures are expected to further reduce emissions.

The supermarket will feature the integration of highly efficient energy and generation technologies to achieve GHG reduction goals. Examples include: CO2 refrigeration with heat ejectors; combined cooling, heating and power; high efficiency building envelope (the boundary between the interior and exterior of a building); LED lighting; advanced heat recovery; and solar photovoltaics on the roof, carports, cart corrals and building façade.
