Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to develop new applications for hydrolysis lignin, a co-product of FPInnovations’ proprietary process for the production of wood sugars.
The project will develop applications for hydrolysis lignin, such as bio-based adhesives for medium density fibreboard (MDF) and oriented strand board (OSB), with animal feed binders that also have nutritional benefits and promote animal health, and bio-composites.
The fractionation of non-food biomass to sugars and lignin is a growing industry and pathways to transform the sugars to platform chemicals abound. Value-added applications for the lignin co-product are less developed, but are critical to an economically viable biomass to chemicals industry.
Expected Results
The success of this project will create a viable wood-to-chemicals industry that can diversify the forest-based economy of rural communities, make Canada a leader in the development of a hybrid chemical industry, and reduce our carbon footprint.
Bio-based materials can replace chemicals and non-bio-produced products, add value to under-utilized wood species and generate new markets for Canada’s forest industry.
Environmental Benefits: reduced GHG emissions, lower water consumption, waste reduction, and reduced land use impacts
