Project Objectives
This project will demonstrate the ability to use biocarbon in an industrial blast furnace in support of future commercial technology demonstration at the ArcelorMittal Dofasco (AMD) plant.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) neutral biocarbon will replace both metallurgical coke and pulverized coal to reduce AMD’s GHG emissions. The project will build confidence in blast furnace operations with biocarbon injection, determine the operating parameters at an industrial scale, support the biocarbon technology selection, advance biocarbon production in Canada, and identify any limiting factors for further levels of replacement.
Expected Results
The expected results include the following:
- The development of the biocarbon supply chain to replace fossil fuel carbon.
- The diversion of waste material (construction and demolition wood, rail ties, forest residues).
- The demonstration of a new technical method to partially switch fuel in the blast furnace to one that is less GHG intensive – leading to a reduction in GHG generated from the blast furnace.
