Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to validate the economics, technical feasibility, robustness, and codes and standards of Arctic-hardened novel charging stations, charging and heating EVs interlinked to a smart-grid / micro-grid, under harsh climatic conditions.

The Project will develop and deploy multiple recharge stations on at least two remote Northern mining sites, namely Raglan Mine (Nunavik, Quebec – where TUGLIQ already owns and operates a 6-MW windfarm and a 3-MW Li-Ion storage facility) and Minerai de fer Québec’s Bloom Lake Mine (near Fermont, Québec). Recharging will include (minimally): 1 pick-up truck, 1 bus and 1 class-8 truck. Each vehicle will be retrofitted to enable the charger to heat battery banks once the vehicle is charged.

When connected to the grid and not used for transportation, the vehicles will be recharged and kept warm through an intelligent “block heater” configuration that will also double as load shedding for excess renewable energy.  These charging stations will address the barriers inherent to cold-weather charging and operation of EVs, as well as the difficulties associated with connecting fleets of vehicles all at once on a limited isolated grid for overnight charging.

Expected Results

This Project will be transformative to Canadians, particularly to Arctic and remote northern communities. The introduction of EV infrastructure and industrial EVs is a necessary stepping stone towards the gradual replacement of fossil-fueled transport in the high north.

The project will reduce greenhouse gases, protect fragile ecosystems and provide a training ground for the operations and maintenance of EV charging to Inuit’s attending the Arctic Remote Energy Networks Academy.
