Project Objectives

Tap&Go EV is developing a focused electric vehicle charging solution that supports mass deployments of chargers for utilities and municipalities. The objective of this project is to develop and demonstrate the first electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure that enables effortless real-time, authenticated pay-per-use, and open access public charging to directly connect charging infrastructure with users’ utility accounts.

To address the current market barrier of EV charging in multi-unit residential buildings and street level parking, this project will enable EV drivers to pull up to a charger, and through near field wireless communication, the registered vehicle will automatically be authenticated, and the measured energy consumption will be applied seamlessly to their utility user account.

The project will produce a robust digital platform alongside its EV charging assets, which will generate vast amounts of data to be used by utilities to better understand and forecast EV adoption, driving habits, power demand, and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction.

Expected Results

This project is expected to produce a developed prototype in Powertech’s laboratory, as well as specifications for mass production, and a digital platform capable of integrating with utilities. A research study in collaboration with Simon Frasier University will acquire analytics to assess project success, gain future insights, and verify GHG reductions.

These results will benefit Canadians by providing ease of access to public EV charging infrastructure in urban environments thus enabling EV uptake and reducing GHG emissions. The project also aims to develop technologically advanced and exportable products and services to boost Canadian competitiveness in the global market of zero-emission vehicle technology. The solution will ultimately enable EV adoption to be accelerated by removing barriers for many Canadians to switch to pure electric transportation.
