Project Background
This project deployed a community-scale smart grid in Sault Ste. Marie, covering 100% of the PUC service area. By integrating a number of complimentary smart grid technologies, including distributed automation, Voltage/VAR management, and the enhancement of existing Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), PUC is modernizing its distribution infrastructure leading to improved reliability, efficiency and resiliency of the grid.
The project provides an enabling platform for renewable energy and expands customer opportunities to take advantage of enhanced energy services.
Results
The project reduces electricity costs to customers, and increases reliability and power quality, ensuring the grid is positioned to accommodate new Distributed Energy Resources (DER) infrastructure and provide community economic development.
Benefits to Canada
The project allows for improved asset utilization and grid efficiency. The increase in reliability and resiliency will allow for deeper penetration of renewable and enable GHG emissions reductions.
Next Steps
PUC Distribution Inc. will continue to roll out Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) for voltage control and Fault Location, Isolation, and Service Restoration (FLISR). With additional data capability PUC Inc. will begin assessing future voltage optimization and FLISR expansion.
