Project Objectives
This project will test a catalyst mixture developed for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite, low-grade ores, and lower grade waste mining material.
Chalcopyrite is the most abundant of copper sulfides and 80% of world copper reserves are contained in this mineral. Current copper extraction methodologies are capital intensive and lack flexibility for high impurity ores.
This technology allows the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite at low temperature and low pressure and is currently suitable for waste material. This project will accelerate and expand the technology to extraction from low grade waste materials.
Expected Results
This R&D project will provide the engineering and basic economic parameters to demonstrate the business case for the use of the Jetti technology to extract copper from waste material and tailings.
The project will expand the research from low-grade ores to lower grade waste materials to reach the larger market for Canada copper extraction.
Potential long-term outcomes would include improved efficiency in extracting more saleable metal from low grade and waste material and reducing the mining project footprint and environmental impacts.
Anticipated Environmental Benefits: Waste Reduction and reduction in landscape disturbance by enabling the extraction of more copper units per land area.
